Chiefs Win NFL Super Bowl in Epic Overtime Battle

We’ll be the first to admit that we were wrong. However, GamesBelt isn’t the only party weighing up how fate didn’t pan out as planned this morning following the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL Super Bowl. What should have been, and indeed, looked for long periods like a straightforward 49ers victory was upended in overtime, as the Chiefs won their third Super Bowl in five years. Our predictions went out the window, but it was nip and tuck for long periods of the big game on Sunday.

The Most Hyped NFL Super Bowl in Years

Would Patrick Mahomes go on to be the Super Bowl MVP again? Who would Usher perform with? Would Taylor Swift arrive on time (that bit was never in doubt)? These were all questions which hyped up the audience before Super Bowl LVIII. Held at the Allegiant Stadium, the fact that the Chiefs could make it three out of five and be the first team to win back-to-back titles since the Patriots twenty years ago, or that the 49ers could win their first title since the early 90s didn’t seem to factor into the equation.

Once the game started, none of the hype seemed to matter, as the Chiefs and 49ers produced one of the most gripping Super Bowls in recent memory. The defences were the star of the first half, and by the time the fabled half-time show got underway, the 49ers held a sturdy 10-3 lead.

The 49ers Had Victory in Their Grasp

Throughout the second half, the game ebbed and flowed, but with victory mere seconds away, a last-gasp field goal saw the Chiefs take the score to 19-19, and that meant overtime. Compared to recent score lines, this one had epic written all over it. Right from the restart, the 49ers once again pressed their advantage, moving back into a slender lead. Having already let their lead slip once in regulation time, you’d swear it couldn’t happen again – but it did, and who else could spoil the show but Patrick Mahomes?

The 49ers were favourites before throwing it away in overtime.

The Underdogs Triumph in Overtime

With seconds left on the clock, Patrick Mahomes threw a touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman to bring an end to the proceedings and ensure that the unfancied Chiefs won their third Super Bowl in five years and became the first team since the Patriots to win two Super Bowl finals on the bounce, back in 2003 and 2004.

Mahomes has now become just the sixth quarterback to win three or more Super Bowls. Coach Andy Reid has three himself. The result was also only the second Super Bowl to head to overtime. The last time this happened, Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was on the losing side against the Patriots. This time, Shanahan was the 49ers coach, only to be let down in overtime once more.

The 49ers will be cursing their luck this morning, wondering how it all slipped away from them not once but twice. While we’re counting our losses, along with many others who backed the 49ers to triumph, Shanahan must be wondering what he has to do to land a win.
