It’s All Going Wrong for Bayern München and Harry Kane

Harry Kane’s transfer to FC Bayern München was supposed to herald a renaissance for England’s lead striker. The rumoured £100m transfer was set to see Kane end his trophyless streak to play in the Bundesliga for a team which traditionally sweeps the honours. There were plenty of critics who attacked Kane for seeking any old trophy for his cabinet instead of fighting out for major honours with England’s top clubs in a more challenging league. However, just six months into his Bayern career, the wheels have sort of come off for Kane and Munich. Suddenly, everything’s going wrong, and Kane may end up with nothing whatsoever.

Munich Let It Slip in Rome

This week’s UEFA Champions League defeat has only highlighted the poor form currently experienced by Bayern. FC Bayern München slipped up (again) against an impressive Lazio side. A penalty proved to be the key difference in Rome, in a 1-0 defeat which ensured that Bayern headed into the second leg without a crucial away goal. It is not as if Harry Kane didn’t have chances to create and score. However, missing Muller’s cutback inside the first ten minutes would be the chance that went begging. FC Bayern is in rotten form and can’t seem to muster up much luck at the moment. If they hope to progress in the Champions League, they are going to need to beat Lazio and ensure that the Italians lose by more than one goal to be sure of success.

Dumped Out of the Cup

The defeat in Rome is the second successive cup trouncing FC Bayern Münich has suffered of late. Back in November, they were unceremoniously dumped out of the German DFB following a shock 2-1 defeat away to third-tier 1.FC Saarbrücken. Cup shocks happen, though, and Bayern could probably have got over that were it not preceded by a pounding in the Super Cup and this most recent Champions League defeat.

Earlier Woes Befall Bayern

Thus far, we count two opportunities where Harry Kane will now fail to lift silverware in his first season with Bayern. His first opportunity, though, came way back at the very start of the season, when Bayern took on RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup, the curtain opener to the new Bundesliga season. Leipzig rounded out 3-0 winners in a true battle for Kane and Bayern. Shortly after that, he hit some blistering form.

So, two chances for silverware have gone begging, and unless Bayern overturns the 1-0 deficit at home against Lazio, the chance of European success will go up in smoke, too. Even if they did, they certainly aren’t favourites to take home the famous trophy, with plenty of heavy hitters still involved from Europe’s other top leagues.

Will Bayern Win the Bundesliga?

What about the Bundesliga, though? Surely the National League trophy is a dead cert for Kane and Bayern? Actually, no. A recent 3-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen sees Munich five points off the summit. What made it sting more was that it is Leverkusen who currently leads the pack. It is true that rivals Dortmund and Stuttgart are a further ten points back (although Stuttgart has a game in hand), and they shouldn’t pose a threat unless Bayern’s confidence goes and the season unravels further. It seems like a straight duel between München and Leverkusen.
